Outsourcing started as a way for companies to get professional assistance in areas outside their core competency. For example a software development company might outsource accounting or even tech support. But when you start outsourcing your core competency you lose control of that which makes you valuable. In some sense, core competency is another bubble that may someday burst, leaving all those who inappropriately depended on it in a severely weakened state.

@James: Thanks for your opinion. It is a very good point that many companies could use outsourcing instead of simply "No can't do that". I think that it will be interesting to see how much of the heavy outsourcing can actually be done. I think that it will probably depend on what the middleman company's value add is.

1. Start-ups need to outsource, its unlikely that the core team will have all the full range of experience required, and its vital that startups aren't pressured to taking on additional staff just to fill skills gaps. The core team has the responsibility to carry the company vision, outsourcing simply enables you to get the expertise you need without having to find that magic person that can be a company evangelist.

2. The recent growth of virtual organisations, which heavily rely on outsourcing shows that it is possible to build a successful business incorporating this strategy. Businesses are becoming increasingly dependent on networking, which allows (especially young) enterprises to respond quickly to changing market demands. Innovative use of outsourcing can also be a key driver of economic development, Red Button Design are planning on using this, keep an eye on www.redbuttondesign.blogspot.com to see how it works out!
